Custom Mechanical Disc Brakes

For proprietary builds and replacement parts, Knott Brake offers custom mechanical disc brakes built to your specifications. For high-precision braking in any environment, mechanical disc brakes offer the best performance. For discs, calipers, levers or a full mechanical disc brake set, our design and engineering team works for you to get you what you need.

Parts Of A Mechanical Disc Brake

While disc brakes are commonplace on vehicles and construction equipment, there can be some confusion about how mechanical disc brakes differ from hydraulic or pneumatic models. While hydraulic systems use a fluid-filled brake line to apply pressure to the rotor, mechanical disc brakes use a more simplified system. Here are the parts of a mechanical disc brake set:

Mechanical Disc Brake Levers

Typically a brake pedal, paddle or lever, this is the mechanism that you physically push, pull or clamp onto in order to engage the brake system.

Cable

Often made of stainless steel, the brake cable connects the actuator to your mechanical disc brake caliper. It transfers the energy from the actuator to the caliper (the harder you depress the actuator, the more energy is transferred into your brakes, and the more you will slow down). In a hydraulic system, this cable would be hollow and filled with fluid.

Calipers

Your mechanical disc brake calipers physically squeeze the rotor, transferring energy between the braking system and the rotor to slow down the vehicle. Caliper size can matter a great deal; the larger the surface area of your brake pads, the better stopping power you are likely to have.

Brake Pads

Pads act as a buffer between the calipers and rotor of your mechanical disc brake system. Brake pads have to provide enough friction to slow the rotor while not overheating them or causing damage from excess abrasiveness.
