Trailer Brake System

Air, hydraulic surge, and electric brakes are three brake systems commonly found on trailers. The weight of the vehicle and the application for which the trailer gets used, all determines the type of brake system utilized. Electric brakes are among the most common brakes there are, and surge brakes are in most marine applications.

Brakes must be installed on a tandem axle utility trailer with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 7500-lbs according to regulations in the USA. Moreover, any trailer that weighs over 3000-lbs has to have brakes on every wheel in most states, however, laws can vary.

Electric Trailer Brakes

The voltage from the tow vehicle’s battery is what makes the brakes work. The system functions due to the principle that magnetic force is proportional to the voltage supplied to an electromagnet. As a result, electromagnets located inside each brake drum trigger the brake’s shoes against that drum through a simple lever system. The magnet attracts the iron brake drum and moves to the drum as the voltage flows. The higher the voltage, the more powerful the braking force will be.

The total braking effort gets controlled by a brake controller. This device is typically mounted in, on, or around the dashboard of the vehicle.

Trailers that have electric brake systems must have a standalone battery supply to stop the vehicle in the event of an emergency.

Typically a breakaway cable comes standard on electric trailer brake systems. This cable initiates maximum braking effort through a switch when the cable happens to get pulled. When working with tandem axle trailers, brakes can get installed on one or both of the trailer axles depending on the trailer’s weight rating.

Axle Brakes

You find electric brake axles on trailers, and they generally have a magnetic or electric braking system. The trailer can apply its own brakes when connected to the towing vehicle and attempting to bring the trailer and load to a controlled and stable stop.

If you try to pull a trailer without the brake axles, it will be difficult to control the vehicle in emergencies. Most often, the trailer will begin to sway and jackknife if the towing vehicle brakes are forcefully engaged. The function of the axle brake is to prevent the erratic movement of the trailer in emergency braking conditions.

We have high-performance axle brakes that will get you from point A to point B safely.

Our company supplies the braking equipment for heavy-duty trailers all over the world, and we have confidence that we can find the perfect braking solutions for you too!
